Sexual Bill of Rights

Human beings have the right to have needs. This simple statement has been a natural basis for our growing consciousness as a species that we all matter, that we all deserve respect.  From the English Magna Charta to the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, from the U.S. Bill of Rights to the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights our consciousness of the need to treat people with respect for their rights has grown inexorably.  These true rights are universal for every person in every place and for all time and these rights belong to us whether our governments recognize them or not.  In the same way that we have political rights, social rights and even physical rights, people have sexual rights and they include:

1. The right to be a sexual being: to feel sexual feelings, think sexual thoughts and engage in sexual fantasy and consensual sexual behaviors and conversation.

2. The right to one’s own sense of humor and playfulness about sexuality.

3. The right to read and otherwise receive sexual information that is appropriate to my age and needs.

4. The right to be accepted and protected as a sexual being (including my gender, thoughts and preferences) by my entire community.

5. The right to education and religious access that affirms, supports and respects my sexuality.

6. The right to protection from unwanted sexual attention, words and acts—including an invasion of my privacy.

7. The right to evaluate for oneself potential partners for sexual compatibility and marriage.

8. The right to change my thoughts or any aspect of my sexuality.

9. The right to disclose any aspect of my sexuality at my own discretion including my private thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
