Political Rape: It’s Legit!August 21, 2012
The modern Republican Party long ago become a sex cult. Their focus on controlling consensual adult sexual behaviors (like the sale of sex toys in Texas) has led to their opposition to marriage equality for gay Americans, to legal access to birth control and to sex education, their opposition to openly gay citizens serving in the military and to their position that all pregnant women should be forced to give birth. They affirmed their anti-abortion plank recently:
“…we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed…We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children.”
That every fertilized egg has “a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed,” is taken seriously by conservative Republicans. This position, based on Vatican theology, has become a litmus test of whether one is a “true” Republican or just a Republican In Name Only (RINO). Congressman Todd Akin of Missouri, currently running for Senate, has completely bought into this theology and therefore is compelled to make the scientific facts fit his theology.
Rep. Todd Akin…justified his extreme opposition to abortion by claiming that victims of “legitimate rape” rarely get pregnant.
In an interview…the GOP Senate nominee was asked if he supported abortion in the case of rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Akin has since backed away from his language of “legitimate” rape, but he has not backed away from the thinking that led to his use of this language. According to a 1996 report in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there are about 32,000 unwanted pregnancies caused by rape every year in the United States. Akin is using the old Madonna vs. Whore paradigm to repackage this inconvenient fact. If he didn’t do this, we might otherwise have sympathy for a woman who was forced to bear her attacker’s child. So, you see, if she actually conceived a child–then she really wanted to have sex and is a whore. The conclusion: she has reaped what she has sown and we have no obligation to provide relief in the form of legal, accessible and safe abortion. Imagine yourself, your wife or your daughter in this situation and then, come, reason with us.
